Walmart Recalls Ground Beef Over E. Coli Concerns

Over 16,000 Pounds of Beef Affected

Recall Issued by USDA

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a recall notice for ground beef distributed by Cargill Meat Solutions to Walmart stores due to E. coli concerns.

More than 16,000 pounds of raw ground beef products were recalled by the USDA on Wednesday on concerns the meat may be contaminated with the bacteria.

The raw ground beef items were produced on March 31, 2023, and have sell-by dates of April 8, 2023, through April 12, 2023. The recalled products bear establishment number "EST. 46841" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The recalled products were distributed to Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled ground beef are urged not to consume it. The product should be thrown away or returned to the store for a full refund.

E. coli is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness, including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. In some cases, E. coli can cause more severe illnesses, such as kidney failure and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

The USDA is working with Cargill Meat Solutions to investigate the source of the contamination. The agency is also working with Walmart to remove the recalled products from store shelves.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Cargill Meat Solutions at 1-888-812-7031.

Conclusion

The recall of over 16,000 pounds of ground beef due to E. coli concerns is a reminder of the importance of food safety. Consumers should always cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any harmful bacteria. They should also wash their hands and any surfaces that come into contact with raw meat thoroughly.
